From the Wetterau to the world
It is the industry-mix, which made the Wetteraukreis to the successful economic location, as which analysts and statisticians say. High-technology has its place as well as tradition-steeped small trade in the Wetteraukreis, small entrepreneurs economise beside global firms, highly specialized public service companies profit from situation and infrastructure similarly to deep-rooted family businesses. Always not on some few lines of business established, the spectrum of the operations widened once more in the last years. Through the new rise of companies, for example the company for payment systems ltd. (GZS in German), the engineer-company Lahmeyer International, the Alliance of Dresdner Bauspar INC. and the radio station FFH hundreds of new jobs in Bad Vilbel had been created. Of importance for the economic-location Bad Vilbel is the firm Stada Arzneimittel INC. [a pharmaceutical firm], that employs approximately 500 people locally. Moreover, the numerous medicinal and mineral water-sources make the city an important location for the German mineral water-industry. Also in the neighbouring Karben, the number of employees clearly rose to approximately 8.000 in the last years. Contrary to the general trend, the emphasis in Karben now is in the production-sector. One of the biggest and most known companies locally, Siemens VDO Automotive AG and the office-furniture-system-manufacturers König+Neurath Inc.
In the district capital Friedberg, an extremely modern company, called ABB is located, entailing a long history. For over 100 years, the co-workers of the independent firms ASEA and BBC with their inventions advanced the technical development. During 1988, the two competitors then focused their strengths and amalgamated to the ABB (Asea Brown Boveri) INC. with home office in Zurich. ABB is a leading company for energy and automation-technology. The group of companies is represented in more than 100 countries. In Rosbach, only few kilometres away, big areas of commercial parks were also built in direct proximity of the A5 in the last years. The REWE-trade group is the biggest employer here. For centuries the Wetterau is known for the occurrence of numerous fountains. Approximately 15 percent of promoted water in Germany has its origin here. The trend towards concentration didn't pass the region. In 2001, the traditional Rosbacher fountain was taken over by Bad Vilbel’s company Hassia & Luisen. However, there are water companies also in picturesque and dignified Bad Nauheim and as well as in Echzell, serving predominantly the regional market.
The Hassia package company (Hassia Verpackungsmaschinen Ltd.), founded in 1953 in Ranstadt, counts to the Forefathers of the German package-industry. Many current packages have their origin in the Wetterau, such as the packages for pills, the portion-package for jelly or the refreshment-cloth. For 50 years, filling and closing machines are produces and sold world-wide. The export-share of the company with 240 co-workers is defined more than 85.
