Living where others spend their holidays
The Wetterau’s gently undulating landscape with its idyllic villages and historical
towns, with its ever-varying mosaic of fields and woods, natural river beds and
hills is an ideal place for outdoor activities. Several thousand kilometres of
cycling and walking paths cover the Wetterau district in a closely-knit network.
You can follow the footsteps of the Romans in the western part of the Wetterau
district along the former limes, which was used until 260 AD to secure their borders.
Even back then this world power appreciated the benefits of the Wetterau region.

The monumental structure makes an elegant curve to include this region into the occupied lands. Today you can still see remains of this, Europe’s largest border structure, at many points across the district. A whole series of historical buildings such as castles, towers and bathing facilities have been excavated, conserved, rebuilt and opened to the public. The Cohort fort on the Saalburg pass in the Taunus region is absolutely unique. It was completely rebuilt and is now a research centre and a great tourist attraction.
There is also an extensive range of sporting and leisure activities on offer: Highly-modern outdoor and indoor tennis courts, riding, golf, gliding, indoor and outdoor swimming pools or bathing areas in lakes, surfing, sailing, fishing, cycling and mountain biking. Even during winter you can pursue outdoor activities: The nearby areas of Taunus and Vogelsberg offer a range of attractive winter sport activities for a central mountain region. Skiing fans will find a comprehensive network of cross country skiing paths as well as several small, but excellent ski slopes.
