A brief information

The Wetteraukreis is one of the 21 Hessian districts. It belongs to the government-area Darmstadt and was created in the course of the area-reform. 1972 it was formed by the association of the counties Friedberg and Büdingen.

Most upper committee of the county is the county-council (regional parliament), consisting of 81 delegates. It was elected in March 23^th 2006. Presently, it is constituted by 32 Christian-Democrats, 29 Social-Democrats, 6 GREEN party members, 5 representatives of the free voter-community, 4 Liberal-Democrats, 3 National-Democrats and 3 from the left party.

The County-Council of the Wetteraukreis

It is task of the county-day to make the fundamental decisions as well as to control the Commissions and the local authorities.

To its support and to the preparation of the decisions, the county-council formed 7 expert-committees.

The composition of the committees is done in accordance with the strength of the factions in the county-council. Since such a big committee as the county-council cannot make all decisions by itself, it picks the county-commission for the settlement of the so-called "current" issues with exception of the District-Administrator (Landrat), who is chosen by the citizens directly. The county-commission consists of 8 honorary county-councillors as well as the 3 full-time members. These three full-time members, District-Administrator Joachim Arnold(SPD), the first county-councillor oswin Veith (CDU) and the county-councillor Ottmar Lich (FW), are responsible for a department of the local authority in each case. A department consists of several offices of the local authority.

The tasks of the local authority, that are fulfilled by the altogether 17 offices, are very diverse.

Beside the local authority, which is a local managing board, there is the Hessian regional-managing board in the county-house better known as the Rural district Office (Landratsamt).

On county-level, this managing board is subordinated to the District-Administrator. To the tasks of the " District-Administrator as authority of the regional-managing board", as the Rural district Office is called in authority-German, belong the motor-vehicle licence and the driver's license-office, but also the police, the veterinarian-office and the land registry-office.
