Where the stone of the Celt's prince (presumably) comes

Road length: 12.7 kilometres, 270 metres height, predominantly unfastened forest ways and meadow ways
Pure walking time: Three hours

Our today's hike encloses both Ortenberger parts of town mountain home and pale brook. Local mountain is blest by the nature, more exactly is taken by the geology. For a long time valuable stones, in particular basalt, but in some districts become already here also a new red sandstone broken. Admittedly, not only to the joy of the people in local mountain, because the treacly load traffic has already crossed the measure of the tolerable for many. A new access road to the local mountain biggest stone quarry at mountain home creates discharge, however, has led also to a massive intervention in the nature. Geologically enthusiasts take, admittedly, here again her pleasure. The explanation of the sandstone is a special picture for them.

We begin our hike in the sports field in pale brook. Here is a big parking bay where we can put down our car. We run on the street in the direction of mountain home about 200 metres and leave the way to the left and cross the pale brook after short one. The concrete way changes to a meadow way, we go straight ahead uphill. We reach 100 metres after the bridge an asphalted cycle track which will lead us to the right in the direction of mountain home. We follow the cycle track a good 2 ½ kilometres. Occasionally we come to a big meadow in which we pause and simply listen in to many voices of the nature.

After a few hundred metres we reach the street which connects local mountain with mountain home. We follow the cycle track to the left and after few metres again to the right and go on the grit way in the direction of protection house. We see 300 metres after the club house on the right the Bergheimer moor. A valuable biotope which has presumably originated in the course of the centuries from Beweidung with sheep or also with goats. Here grow Tausendgüldenkraut, golden thistle, juniper bushes and other rare plants.

At the edge of the forest we can already throw the first sight on the big stone quarry of mountain home. Unfortunately, for visitors he is closed. We go on on our way to us to an asphalted one get away for which we go to the right. Before the edge of the forest we make a small excursion to the left. After about 100 metres (behind a raised hide) we turn to the right between the trees and come after few metres to a strong Abbruchkante. Here kaolin was diminished till the 60s. Kaolin or also porcelain earth is a fine, white rock free of iron which contains Kaolinit, a decomposition product of the feldspar as a main part. Kaolin becomes for the production of paper and porcelain, used for medical powder. If it is not so high-quality qualitatively as the kaolin here at mountain home, it found as an admixture for the house plaster and above all also as a form sand in the iron foundry of grove Hirzen use.

We go on on the asphalt way a small little piece and take the first possibility to the left where we walk on the meadow way in the direction of mountain home. Besides, we enjoy the marvellous holiday panorama. The wood will come against mountain home brighter and if we to the paved street, we go to the left. At mountain home we can convince ourselves which rocks are got here from the earth. Everywhere nice new red sandstones are obstructed in different colours, just as the variously usable basalt.

We cross the high street and pass the pale brook in Wiesenstrasse. We follow the way with light bends in the direction of edge of the forest. There we keep on the left and soon come to the new street to the Bergheimer stone quarry. Before we cross a gravelled place where one can make all sorts of findings. Stones with gas bubbles, iron oxide and Montmorillonit, new red sandstone and manganese (from the left). Now we cross the street and go after 300 metres to the right. Around is a wonderful Buchenwald, quite typically for the region. In historical springs from the 8th century the region is also called booking country of (Buchonia).

We go on our way and at the first crossroad on the left. Now we are on historical "Bettenstrasse" which is committed according to estimates for from 3000 to 4000 years. Once she led from Frankfurt via Fulda to Thuringia. This "Altstrasse" shows in her edges one more whole series of tumuli. To miracles this is not able to do the expert. Since differently than in the close settled areas the graves have better kept here. The people in former times have often walked in big groups, not least because of fear of thieves. If one was on the move with bag and baggage, it could also happen that on the way a member died. He was buried according to the religious rites in a tumulus in the wayside.

Here at some places one can still recognise quite very well the hollow ways of the past centuries. The historical ways were not like today narrow routes, but wide routes which were held free of tree (so that there no robbers could hide). The seaways were changed over and over again if they had driven possibly too much. We reach a vantage point, from where we look directly at the clear mountain. Further on the left we see brook Aulendie and in the horizon the city of Büdingen.

Now we leave the wood and go along to the right at the edge of the forest in the direction of pale brook. We reach the Ortenberger part of town in the new building area. Before we turn here to the left, however, we still make a small excursion straight ahead. After 150 metres at the edge of the forest we turn to the right. The valley-like incision has originated from the dismantling of sandstone. After a total of 500 metres we come to the end of the stone quarry. Of this stone the sculpture of the Celt's prince was worked here presumably by the clear mountain. We should not go too near to the cliff face, because over and over again it happens that big blocks free themselves of the wall. Back to Waldstrasse we go to the right up to the high street where we go once more to the right and return after few metres in our parking bay.

Blacksmith Ruppel from Echzell deals substantially - there are many horses in the eastern Wetterau.
